garden class -3

3/28/09

1. pruning stimulates growth
2. heading v.s. thinning cut
- Heading cut: just cut the terminal; promotes lateral growth (redirect energy)
- Thinning cut: cut all the way toward the end of the branch
3. three steps for prunning
- get rid of the downward, dead branches
- get rid of the overlap branch
- get rid of branch toward the center
(knowing where the fruit will be)
4. . max. cut is approx. 1/3 of the branch
- scar the barb
-prepare for next year growth

Timing:
- after the harsh stome is over
- late winter/early spring

Fruit thinning:
- Thin fruit after June drop (or whenthe fruit is approx. a quarter big)

- Water spruce vs. sucker
- Water spruce: when the fruit tree was trimmed too much (straight shoot from the branch)
- sucker: branch comes from the ground (suck water)

Tools:
- bypass pruner
- bypass lopper
- extended lopper for higher branches
- don't use anil pruner
----------------------------------------------------------------
1. 水蜜桃 (50%cut)
- 水蜜桃只會長在前一年長的新枝上
- open center spacing(once 3-4 scafold branch are development, trim off the center leader)
- Train the tree such that each scafold is 3-4 inches apart.
- 50% cut of each main scarfold
- Heading cut for this years growth (next years fruit)
- Leave 5-6 inches spacing between each fruit
-
2. 蘋果 李子 西洋梨 (30% cut)
- modified central leader tranining (peach tree on peach tree)
- fruit is grown on "spur"
- Only 2 + years old branch will produce pruit

3. berry (summer berry vs. ever berry)
- summer berry: one growing season; two year growth; the 1st year grow keen; 2nd year produce fruit; after the fruit, the keen died.
- ever berry: two growing seasons; top tip produce fruit and will die after fall; prune the top 1/3 off, and leave the rest keen(?). They will produce fruit in spring.
4. 葡萄藤 (90%cut)
-Only produce fruit on previous year's keen
- leave total off 45-60 barb (4 keens with 10-15 barb each)
-cut 4 keen with 2 barb (for this year's keen and will produce fruit for next year)
5. appricot (dum fruit)
